The worldwide Kyokushin community is mourning the passing of Kaicho Hatsuo Royama, one of the most respected and influential figures in the history of Kyokushin Karate. Kaicho Royama passed away on August 3, 2026, at the age of 78.
His passing is not only an immeasurable loss for the Kyokushin-kan family, but also for the entire martial arts world. He devoted his life to the pursuit of Budo, the preservation of traditional Kyokushin Karate, and the development of generations of students and instructors around the world.
A Lifetime Dedicated to Kyokushin Karate
Born on March 31, 1948, in Gyoda, Saitama Prefecture, Japan, Hatsuo Royama began training at the Oyama Dojo as a teenager. He studied directly under Sosai Masutatsu Oyama, the founder of Kyokushin Karate, and committed himself to a lifetime of demanding physical, technical, and spiritual training.
Kaicho Royama became widely known for his extraordinary fighting ability, powerful low kicks, disciplined technique, and unwavering spirit. In 1973, he won the Fifth All-Japan Open Karate Championship. Two years later, he finished as runner-up in the First World Open Karate Championship after an unforgettable final.
However, his legacy extends far beyond his competitive achievements. Kaicho Royama was a devoted teacher, leader, and guardian of Budo whose influence reached dojos and students throughout the world.
In 2003, he established Kyokushin-kan and served as its first Kancho. Through the organization, he worked tirelessly to preserve the traditional values, techniques, and philosophy of Kyokushin Karate while guiding its development for future generations.
A Teacher Who Changed Countless Lives
For Shihan Seyar Azadani, Kaicho Royama was far more than an international karate leader. He was a teacher and mentor from whom Shihan Azadani had the privilege of learning for more than 20 years.
Reflecting on this profound loss, Shihan Azadani wrote:
“Today, the Kyokushin-kan family has lost a great leader, teacher, and guardian of Budo.”
He described Kaicho Royama’s life as a testament to humility, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to preserving the true spirit of Kyokushin-kan. His influence reached far beyond the walls of the dojo and will continue to guide those who follow the path of Budo.
“The greatest tribute we can offer our teacher is to live the values he devoted his life to preserving,” Shihan Azadani shared.
These words reflect the responsibility now carried by Kaicho Royama’s students and all those shaped by his teachings. His principles must continue through sincere training, disciplined conduct, respect for others, and dedication to the true meaning of martial arts.
A Legacy That Will Continue Around the World
Kaicho Royama leaves behind a worldwide family of instructors, students, and martial artists whose lives were changed by his leadership and example. Every dojo that preserves his teachings, every instructor who passes his principles to another generation, and every student who trains with sincerity will help keep his legacy alive.
His passing leaves a space that cannot be filled, but the path he created remains before us. His teachings will continue through every bow of respect, every disciplined training session, and every sincere step taken along the path of Budo.
Shihan Seyar Azadani expressed his commitment to honoring his teacher by continuing the work to which Kaicho Royama dedicated his life:
“In gratitude for everything he gave us, I will continue to walk the path he showed us and do my part to further the growth of Kyokushin-kan in the USA and abroad.”
