As competitors from 24 countries gathered inside the arena in Burgas, Bulgaria, the atmosphere reflected everything Kyokushin represents: discipline, respect, perseverance, humility, and international friendship.
Senior instructors, Branch Chiefs, Senseis, Shihans, officials, and competitors stood together, each carrying years, and often decades, of dedication to traditional Kyokushin. Among them stood an American instructor who had spent more than thirty years walking a single path. Only weeks earlier, he had helped lead one of the most significant milestones in the history of Kyokushin-kan in the United States.
Now, he stood on the tatami for a different reason. Not to organize. Not to teach. Not to lead from the sidelines. But to continue learning.
The Championship
One championship. One journey.
Representing the United States, Shihan Seyar Azadani earned 1st Place in the Men’s (+18) Kata Division at the 2026 European Kyokushin-kan Open Championships, one of Kyokushin-kan’s premier international championships, held every two years.
The championship welcomed approximately 273 athletes from 24 countries, bringing together experienced competitors, senior instructors, Branch Chiefs, and officials from throughout the organization.
The Men’s Kata Division represented one of the championship’s highest technical standards. Many competitors were experienced Senseis, Shihans, and accomplished black belts who had dedicated decades to refining their art.
Following an outstanding preliminary performance, Shihan Azadani advanced to the finals tied for the highest qualifying score. In the championship round, he delivered another composed and technically refined performance, earning 17.7 points to capture the European title. Bulgaria’s Radamir Aheyev finished second with 17.5 points, while David Sanchez of Spain and Maksym Sapiyanyi of Ukraine shared third place.
More Than a Medal
The result carries a larger meaning.
The significance of the victory extends far beyond the final score. The previous European Kyokushin-kan Open Championships, held in September 2024 in Cluj, Romania, saw Shihan Nathan Ligo of Ligo Dojo of Budo Karate in the United States capture the Men’s Kata title.
With Shihan Azadani’s victory in Burgas, instructors from the United States have now won the Men’s Kata title at two consecutive European Kyokushin-kan Open Championships.
This achievement reflects the growing technical standard, dedication, and international respect earned by Kyokushin-kan practitioners throughout the United States. It also demonstrates that continued growth can exist alongside faithfulness to the traditions of Budo.

To many practitioners, Kata represents one of the highest expressions of traditional Kyokushin Karate. Unlike kumite, where competitors face one another through full-contact sparring, Kata leaves nowhere to hide.

At the highest level, judges evaluate not simply how techniques look, but whether the karateka embodies the principles of traditional Budo. Kata cannot be mastered through talent alone. It is refined through thousands of hours of disciplined practice and decades of continuous improvement.

For more than thirty years, Shihan Seyar Azadani has remained committed to one path: the path of Kyokushin.
Throughout those decades he has trained, taught, competed, mentored, and continued learning while remaining committed to the principles of traditional Budo. Across multiple countries he has instructed hundreds of students.
Many have become national and international champions. Many have become respected Senseis. Many now serve as Shihans and instructors themselves.
Yet, despite decades of teaching and leadership, he continues to step onto the competition floor. Because in Budo, rank is never the destination. It is the beginning of greater responsibility.
Leadership Through Action

Traditional Budo teaches that leadership is earned through example. An instructor should never stop learning, never stop improving, and never stop challenging himself.
The responsibility of an instructor is not simply to teach technique. It is to continue growing while inspiring others to do the same. Students deserve instructors who demonstrate the same discipline they ask of those they teach.
This philosophy has guided Shihan Azadani throughout more than three decades in Kyokushin. It remains the foundation of Azadani Dojo today.
An instructor’s greatest responsibility is not to produce champions, but to help develop future instructors, future leaders, and people of strong character who will preserve the true spirit of Kyokushin for generations to come.

Only weeks before traveling to Bulgaria, Shihan Azadani helped organize and host the 2026 America Open Kyokushin-kan International Championships in Saint Augustine, Florida.
The event marked a historic milestone for Kyokushin-kan in the United States. It brought together an international field and demonstrated what is possible when Branch Chiefs, instructors, students, parents, volunteers, officials, and supporters unite around a shared purpose.
The championship strengthened friendships, encouraged technical exchange, inspired future generations, and demonstrated the continued growth of Kyokushin-kan throughout the United States.
History is rarely created by one individual. It is built through the collective efforts of many people working together for something greater than themselves.
